So “was” is the past form of the verb to be used in the singular person and “were” is the form which we use in the plural person except of the pronoun “you” where we use “were”… though we expect a more cohesive enviroment we greatly continue to center the origin of a geographical area where a group of organisms, either domesticated or wild, first developed its distinctive properties.
